## 🖥️ What this app does
smartest-tv lets you control a smart TV with simple text commands. You can ask it to play a show, open a streaming app, change the volume, or launch content by name from your terminal.
It is built for common smart TV brands and devices, including:
- LG TV
- Samsung TV
- Roku
- Android TV
You can also use it with tools like MCP servers and AI agents for a more guided setup.

### What to do on Windows
1. Open the release page.
2. Find the latest version.
3. Download the Windows file from the list of assets.
4. Open the file you downloaded.
5. Follow the on-screen steps.
If Windows asks for permission, choose Yes or Run.
### If you prefer the terminal
You can also install the Python package if you already use Python on your PC:
- Package name: `stv`
- Project name: `smartest-tv`
That path works best if you want to run commands from a terminal and already have Python set up
## 🔧 Before you start
For the smoothest setup, use:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- A smart TV on the same Wi-Fi network
- A recent version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox
- Access to your TV remote for first-time pairing if needed
For the Python version, you may also need:
- Python 3.10 or newer
- Access to Command Prompt or PowerShell
## 🚀 First run
After you install the app, open it and connect it to your TV.
Typical setup steps:
1. Start the app.
2. Pick your TV brand or device type.
3. Enter the TV’s IP address if the app asks for it.
4. Confirm the connection on the TV if needed.
5. Test a simple command like volume up or open YouTube.
If your TV and PC are on the same network, setup is usually quick.
## 🎯 What you can do
smartest-tv focuses on simple tasks that most people want every day:
- Open Netflix by name
- Start YouTube videos
- Play Spotify on a supported device
- Change volume
- Mute or unmute the TV
- Launch apps
- Navigate menus
- Send text-based commands from your terminal
It works well when you want to avoid pressing many buttons on a remote.
## 🧭 Example commands
If you use the terminal version, you can try commands like these:
- `stv open netflix`
- `stv play "Stranger Things"`
- `stv launch youtube`
- `stv volume up`
- `stv mute`
- `stv open spotify`
The exact command style may change based on your device and setup, but the flow stays simple: type what you want, then send it to the TV.
## 🏠 Supported smart TV use cases
This project fits common home setups, such as:
- A living room TV that you control from a laptop
- A bedroom TV with limited remote use
- A media setup with Roku or Android TV
- A shared family TV where quick app launch matters
- Voice or agent-driven control through MCP tooling
It is useful when you want to move faster than a normal remote allows.
## 🧩 Brand and device support
The app is designed around popular smart TV platforms:
### LG TV
Works with LG models that support network control. The app can send commands over your local network.
### Samsung TV
Supports Samsung smart TV setups that allow remote control from another device on the same network.
### Roku
Useful for Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices. You can launch apps and send basic control commands.
### Android TV
Works with Android TV devices that accept local control commands. This includes many TV boxes and smart TVs.
## 🔐 Network setup
For the app to work, your computer and TV usually need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Check these points if the TV does not respond:
- The TV is turned on
- The TV is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Your PC is on the same network
- The TV allows remote control from local devices
- The TV has the right app permissions enabled
If your TV uses a first-time pairing prompt, accept it on the TV screen.
## 🤖 MCP server support
smartest-tv includes MCP server support for users who connect tools through a model context layer.
This can help if you want to:
- Trigger TV actions from another app
- Connect a local AI tool to your TV
- Use structured commands instead of typing each step by hand
For most Windows users, the release download is still the easiest path. MCP support is useful if you want to build a wider home setup around the TV.
## 🎵 Media and app control
You can use smartest-tv to start content faster:
- Open Netflix by title
- Search for a show name
- Launch YouTube and start a video
- Open Spotify on supported devices
- Jump to a streaming app without scrolling through menus
This is helpful if you know what you want to watch and do not want to spend time moving through the TV interface.
## 🛠️ Basic troubleshooting
If the TV does not respond, try these steps:
1. Confirm the TV is on.
2. Check that your PC and TV use the same network.
3. Restart the app.
4. Restart the TV.
5. Check your TV’s remote control or network settings.
6. Try again with a simple command like volume up.
If the app cannot find your TV, make sure the IP address is correct and that the TV is ready for remote access.
