It is not a claim of 100% security or prevention of every agent attack. This is a deterministic local regression and demo suite. The core idea is simple: 1. Provenance: where did this data come from? 2. Detection: what security-relevant findings exist in the proposed call? 3. Policy: what is this tool allowed to do? In practice, TaintGate combines provenance, findings, tool metadata, and policy into a deterministic decision: ```text provenance + findings + tool metadata + policy -> ALLOW / REVIEW / BLOCK ``` Security-relevant findings include prompt-injection heuristics, secret and high-confidence PII detection, destructive shell and SQL detection, sensitive path access, untrusted-to-side-effect flow detection, and sensitive-to-external flow detection. The core library stays framework-independent. Adapters for OpenAI Agents, LangChain/LangGraph, and MCP route supported tool boundaries through the same core decision engine. Current scenarios include: - indirect prompt injection from retrieved or web content - OpenAI-style API-key exfiltration - AWS credential exfiltration - sensitive filesystem paths - destructive shell and PowerShell commands - destructive SQL, including `DELETE` without `WHERE` - PII flowing to an external destination - scan-limit behavior on deeply nested inputs It is a deterministic security regression suite, not evidence that every prompt-injection or agent attack is prevented. It protects the custom function tools routed through that guardrail and returns structured decision metadata. This does not claim coverage for every hosted tool, MCP surface, or other runtime path in the SDK. ### LangChain and LangGraph `taintgate.langchain.TaintGateToolMiddleware` supports `wrap_tool_call` / `awrap_tool_call` and includes a direct `tool_node(...)` helper for LangGraph execution. This protects the tool execution boundary. It does not claim full LangGraph state or message provenance propagation, and framework serialization or derived strings can still lose provenance in v0.1. ### MCP `taintgate.mcp.TaintGateMCPClient` wraps the public `mcp.ClientSession.call_tool(...)` API and adds: - outgoing call authorization before the MCP request is sent - provenance marking for `TextContent.text` - provenance marking for embedded `TextResourceContents.text` - provenance marking for JSON-compatible `structured_content` string values If post-execution provenance processing fails after the remote call returns, TaintGate raises `PostExecutionProvenanceError` so callers do not mistake that state for "the remote operation never ran" and should not retry blindly. Only calls routed through `TaintGateMCPClient` are protected. Direct `ClientSession.call_tool(...)` calls bypass TaintGate. TaintGate also does not replace MCP authentication or authorization. `InputRequiredResult` is preserved unchanged in v0.1. ## Installation and Extras PyPI distribution is not currently provided. `v0.1.0` is distributed through GitHub Releases and the tagged GitHub source. Git must be available for `git+https` installation. The OpenAI Agents, LangChain/LangGraph, and MCP dependencies are isolated behind their adapter modules. ## Security Boundary and Limitations TaintGate is a runtime enforcement layer, not a complete containment system. - TaintGate protects calls routed through its decorators and adapters. - Direct calls that bypass TaintGate are not automatically protected. - Prompt-injection detection is heuristic and deterministic, not semantic proof. - Provenance can be lost through arbitrary string transformations, formatting, serialization, or framework behavior that does not preserve tainted values. - TaintGate v0.1 accepts supported structured argument trees; convert arbitrary custom Python objects or dataclass instances to dict/list/scalar values before protected execution, because unsupported or over-budget unvalidated argument trees fail closed. - TaintGate is not an OS sandbox. - TaintGate is not a credential isolation system. - TaintGate does not replace framework or MCP authentication and authorization. - MCP protection applies only through `TaintGateMCPClient`. - Security policies still need to be configured appropriately for the application.
